If you’ve been following me on Instagram – you’ll probably know that I have recently just returned from the trip of a lifetime across the pond, exploring different parts of the West coast area…
There is something about that part of the world that really grips me; the food, the people, the scenery, the overall vibe… I could go on forever. I find it so inspiring, uplifting and relaxing, yet it still has so much going on for entertainment – something that I constantly crave for as I have always lived on an isolated farm in the country.
We covered route 66 and made a stop at so many incredible places that I loved for completely different reasons – and the last stop of the tour was in the city I have always dreamed of: LA baby!
As we were dropped off in the heart of LA’s main tourist attraction ‘The Walk Of Fame’ – it only took me 5 minutes to take in the crazy in hustle and bustle before I was in an Uber heading straight to the first street on my mind…. Melrose Avenue.
Lined with palm trees and shiny luxurious stores like Rag & Bone, DASH and Marc Jacobs – it almost felt surreal stepping in to this world. Everything was so clean (yet I couldn’t find a bin to chuck my empty cup anywhere… HOW?!), so pristine white and there wasnt a snap happy ‘I LOVE LA’ t shirt baring tourist in sight. Instead, I felt like I was seeing LA at it’s total best and I could really get a feel for how the locals over there really live. I honestly can’t quite express how refreshing it was after the sweaty heat of Hollywood Boulevard… Naaaat ideal!
Unfortunately because of the tour’s itinerary, we only had a few hours to explore LA… (Arghhhh, I KNOW!) but despite this, I made sure I had enough time to visit one of the biggest hot spots in the city for a hearty lunch that you’ll remember. And that place goes by the name of ‘Urth Caffe’ – a surprisingly modest but insanely popular cafe/restaurant perched on one of Melrose Avenue’s many corners (it’s a looooong ass street!).
The moment I stepped foot outside the shop I was completely blown away by the blatant high demand it has with the Beverly Hills crowd – the line was going out the door and almost every table was full. However I decided this was just too good to miss, and joined the queue whilst I browsed their mouth watering menu in search of a wholesome lunch to keep me going through the next few hours.
It was a tough call between one of their famous sandwiches on sprouted bread, mountainous salads packed with an array of carefully selected produce and their avocado sushi nori wrap – but in the end I was in need of some serious carbs, and the sushi won…
The. Best. Choice. Ever.
The 20 minute wait was so worth it – as each roll was packed with nutty brown rice, creamy avocado and crunchy vegetables that worked so harmoniously together. The spicy wasabi that accompanied the dish added that extra hit and the fact I could devour it in the Cali sunshine really took up a notch!
Now, what you might notice is the fact that I haven’t actually got any photos of the cafe itself to share with you.
The fact is that the place was so busy and full of casual goers – that I felt awkward even carrying my DSLR around my neck. In all honesty, the only down side of visiting this cafe was that I kind of got the vibe that if I was to go around trying to snap the interior/exterior, I’d get some strange looks from those who were chowing down on their salmon nicoise and sourdough.
Buuut hopefully these sly snaps of sushi will give you some idea of how damn delicious their rolls were… I HIGHLY recommend visiting here if you are ever in the LA area!
Next up I headed to ‘Alfred Coffee’ – the brand behind the ‘I just spent 5 minutes scrolling’ worthy account I have been following on Instagram for a while now. Their famous slogan ‘But first, coffee’ is plastered all over their store and coffee cups which in my opinion is absolutely genius. I mean, who doesn’t feel a million times more productive once they’ve had their caffeine hit?
Conveniently positioned just a few blocks down from Urth Caffe, I made a quick stop to check out the store which was hidden down a beautifully understated alleyway dotted with patio style table, chairs and plants in rustic pots. The shop itself is completely different to anywhere I have been before; the floors are in a quirky black and white print, there are antlers embossed on the tiles and the wall is lit up with their slogan in neon lights and you can pick up some of their merchandise from the wooden shelves.
I also love the fact that along with your coffee, you can pick up a Pressed Juicery cold-press or a healthy lunch/snack to fuel you up for the day! I was feeling pretty full after my sushi fix so went for an almond milk iced latte to keep me cool in the LA heat.
The verdict? INSANE!!
The coffee itself was super smooth and rich and the almond milk added a subtle sweetness and creamy texture that I absolutely loved. After living off Starbucks for the past two weeks, this latte felt like the ultimate treat.
After savouring every sip of the sexiest coffee to grace my lips, it was time to head back to the tour bus to say my final farewells to the group… So, so sad!
Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for some more posts hitting the blog soon – including heaven for all foodies: San Franciscoooo!
Until then, feel free to continue drooling at your screens at the sushi and coffee I had here… I know I’m still having foodie flashbacks about dat avocado roll.
