I gotta tell ya, when you can’t go for too many dates (easy now… I might be *ahem* ‘riding solo’, but I am just referring to the dried fruit kind there) – it’s not always the most straight forward of quests to find or create a ‘natural’ snack fix that will actually satisfy that ever demanding mid afternoon sweet tooth.
You see – when I consume too much sugar (uhuh, even in the most ‘innocent’ and natural of forms), I almost always end up curled up in bed feeling sorry for myself whilst I try and nurse one bitch of a flare up. Dates might be undeniably easy on the tastebuds and a pretty decent sweet snack for most; but they also harbor yeast, which when you’re a) yeast intolerant and b) trying to heal your gut, ain’t fun for the digestion.
So I guess that most of the time I just avoid making sweet snacks altogether. The less sugar you eat, the less you crave it. Simples. But sometimes, SOMETIMES I just want that little something to meet me for a quickie in the kitchen at snack ‘o’ clock. Hey, we all have our needs right?
Here, I am sharing the outcome of my latest sweet lover…
Yep, I admit it… I’m totally smitten! He’s a real keeper…
TAHINI, YOU MY QUEENY!
Tahini, a paste made from sesame seeds, is most commonly associated to the creamy chickpea dip we all know and love that is hummus – as well as fancy shmancy Middle Eastern dishes (Ottolenghi’s famous aubergine number comes to mind here!). Sure, it does play a big part in the food over there. But how about we think outside the dipping pot here?
Funnily enough, tahini isn’t just for blending up with chickpeas and parsley. Hell no! Tahini is also a dream when spread generously on crusty toast, mixing with spices for sexed up dressings, spooning in to stir fries for a creamy touch and in this case – making in to what I can only call the closest thing to a fudge that’s actually pretty good for you that you’re gonna get…
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls – allow me to introduce you to these golden turmeric, tahini and honey fudge squares. Minimal ingredients. Fuss free. Easy AF to eat.
Oh, fudge me!
These bites of heaven melt in the mouth with every single sensual bite – and they really couldn’t be more simple to make. In fact, the only equipment you need is a bowl, a spoon and a small baking dish. And as for the ingredients? Well, as long as you’re stocked up with a jar of tahini, coconut oil, some True Honey Co manuka honey (the best in the game – see why here) and the 3 spices I swear by (that’s warming cinnamon, punchy ginger and healing turmeric) – you’re pretty much set.
Now I’m not saying you wanna go ahead and eat the whole slab in one go. As tempting as that might be – these are full of healthful fats that will be sure to show you some serious love, when enjoyed in moderation. So guys… Here’s what we’re gonna do. When you next have a moment to yourself – simply make a swift trip to the fridge, grab one of these golden squares, sit down and s a v o u r. These babies are just the right amount of sweet, nicely filling and will brighten up your afternoon slump in a matter of minutes!
The addition The True Honey Co’s manuka honey adds just the right amount of sweetness; it’s very rich so you only need a small amount to get that balance between the creamy tahini and spices. It’s also a pretty damn good immune booster, so real good to snack on particularly at this time of year when it seems like every other person is down with the damn cold. Like I said in my previous blog post – once you go to the real manuka, you won’t go back. Boom.
So let’s get down to business…
- 8 tbsp tahini
- 3½ tbsp coconut oil, melted
- 1 dessert spoon True Honey Manuka honey
- 2 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- pinch pink salt and black pepper
- Simply combine all the ingredients in a small bowl, stir up with a spoon and pour in to a lined small baking dish. Leave to set in the freezer for a couple of hours and store in the fridge ready to grab when the sweet tooth calls!
